Last week was a rough week for me. Since the new year I have been working on eating better and exercising more in spite of the muscle degeneration I wasn’t expecting as a side effect of Graves’ Disease. Good food and exercise has definitely helped with the side effects of my thyroid condition and helped to keep the nagging depression at bay, but some weeks I still get knocked on my butt. Last week was one of those weeks.
Thankfully I have gotten a lot better over the years at dealing with days on end when I can barely get out of bed. Instead of opening a bottle of wine and a bag of potato chips and resigning myself to the couch for days in a row, I do what I can with the energy available. I go to work and my medical appointments and if I don’t have energy left after just a few hours, I go home and brew a cup of peppermint tea and remind myself that any progress is still progress.
I did a LOT of sleeping last week and feel better for it now. The fatigue is a sign that we still haven’t gotten my medication levels right, but we are getting closer! My brain has been very clouded over the past few months and it has made it hard to blog or write, but I wanted to catch you guys up on a day that I am feeling good. The sun is shining, I have a cup of great coffee in my hands, and I want to share this beautiful day with you!
What’s changed in my life:
- I now wear glasses again! I wore glasses and contacts starting in high school until I had PRK right before my 21st birthday. It has been great over the last 5 years to wake up in the morning and see everything clearly before putting in my contacts. As it sometimes happens, the eye surgery didn’t last and I am back to wearing glasses and contacts again. There are so many pairs of cute glasses out there, I am actually really excited to find a great pair of my own. Does anyone know if glasses that block blue light at night really make a difference?
- I joined a bagpipe band! I really missed playing my bagpipes in college, so I found a local band whose members are patiently helping me to re-learn how to play. I am clumsy and forgot most of the tunes I used to know, but I am having a great time!
- In an effort to eat better, I have started preparing my meals for the week on Sundays instead of leaving it to chance and ending up spending a lot of money on crappy food. After a few weeks of pre-planning and preparing my meals, I can definitely say that I am saving money and notice a significant difference from eating whole foods instead of microwave meals! This is definitely a trend I hope to continue.
- I have started doing yoga semi-regularly. My gym offers a few really good yoga classes and I have started participating once or twice a week for the past 4 weeks. I can’t do a lot with my near constant fatigue and nagging muscle spasms, but I do whatever I am able to. Yoga is perfect for going at your own speed and building strength and flexibility with little to no impact on your joints. Plus, it’s great for minimizing anxiety! I am still awful at any binding yoga poses (I like to breathe, thank you very much), but I am getting pretty good at downward-facing dog!
That’s about it! Sam and Miko have been patient with me on the days when I merge with the couch cushions. Dogs are definitely the most amazing and understanding creatures! I am working on a few book reviews that I hope to have posted soon. I am just waiting for my mind to clear a little more. Until then, I am going to keep reading and find the humor in editing blog posts that look like an rather verbose elementary schooler wrote the first draft!
